چکیده

The optimal time to plant in rainfed semi-arid India is at the onset of the monsoon. While planting too early may result in losses because the seeds may not germinate if the first rains are not followed by subsequent rains, postponing planting for too long is also costly, because yield will typically be lower. Given that mistakes about the precise timing of the monsoon are costly, in this paper we study the differences in the accuracy of subjective expectations that farmers have regarding the timing of the onset of the monsoon. We find that (i) in the region where ∗Financial support from CRMG, World Bank and GARP is gratefully acknowledged. We want to thank Kumar Acharya, the survey team at ICRISAT and specially Dr. K.P.C Rao for many discussions about agricultural practices in semi-arid India and for their efforts in collecting the survey data. Dr. Piara Singh from ICRISAT provided valuable help in the computation rainfall absorption of different soil types. We also thank Don Larson from the World Bank for his valuable advice and encouragement. Paola de Baldomero Zazo, Helene Bie Lilleor and Joan Pina Mart́ı provided outstanding research assistance. Zinc, boron and sulphur deficiencies are holding back the potential of rainfed crops in semi-arid India: Experiences from participatory watershed management

Little attention has been paid to the diagnosis of deficiencies of micronutrients such as zinc (Zn) and boron (B) and secondary nutrient such as sulphur (S) in rainfed systems. We evaluated Zn, B and S status of 1617 farmers’ fields in 14 districts of the semi-arid tropical India. Results showed that most of the soil samples were low to medium in organic carbon contents. Results also revealed t...

Centennial rainfall variation in semi arid and tropical humid environments in the cardamom hill slopes, southern Western Ghats, India

Studies of rainfall variation generally focus on large areas. For example, in India, the area average monsoon rainfall series of the whole country or meteorological subdivisions are used. This would be of no use for local agriculture, particularly in places where rainfall is very high or very low, especially for crops like small cardamom and vanilla which are very sensitive to soil moisture and...

This commentary expands on two of the key themes briefly raised in the paper involving analysis of the evidence about key contextual influences on decisions of value. The first theme focuses on the need to explore in more detail what is called backstage decision-making looking at how actual decisions are made drawing on evidence from ethnographies about decision-making. These studies point to l...
